Like all Americans, I was taught that the U.S. What function did they play in Japan's surrender? The decision to drop the atomic bomb was controversial from the beginning. Why had been the atomic bombs employed against Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945? Immediately after President Truman announced the bombing of Hiroshima, Federal Council General Secretary Samuel McCrae Cavert wired the president. Dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in order to end WWII and save both American and Japanese lives. Cousins writes of his conversations with MacArthur, "MacArthur's views about the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were starkly different than what the general public supposed. This e-book asks and answers a quantity of essential questions. Strategic Bombing Survey group, assigned by President Truman to study the air attacks on Japan, produced a report in July of 1946 that concluded (52-56): When I asked General MacArthur about the decision to drop the bomb, I was surprised to learn he had not even been consulted. On his orders on August 6, an American B-29 dropped a bomb on Hiroshima killing 80,000 people. I can't and won't tell you that you're wrong, but there is credible recorded international correspondence that indicates that Japan was ready to concede defeat. Several different justifications for stopping the war in that manner, and the specific targets and timing of the bombing were considered, some of this is documented, the decision was made by Truman, and only he knew exactly which factors he considered and based his decision on.
